Brands like Pentel and Faber-Castell dominate the mid-range, while niche brands offer unique colour palettes.

Buying Guide: oil pastel

AI
When buying oil pastels, prioritise pigment load and binder quality for vibrant, blendable results. Consider the number of colours needed versus portability. Check if the sticks are soft enough for easy layering but firm enough to hold a point for detailed work.

Selection Criteria

We selected these products based on overall user ratings, value for money, and colour consistency. We prioritised sets with high pigment density and positive feedback on blendability, ensuring a mix of professional and student-grade options.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI
Yes, oil pastels are excellent for beginners because they are forgiving and easy to blend. Sets like Pentel and Artecho offer affordable entry points with good colour coverage, allowing new artists to experiment without high costs.
Oil pastels have a softer, creamier texture due to non-drying oil binders, allowing for easier blending and layering. Wax pastels are harder and drier, holding a sharper point but offering less fluidity. Oil pastels are generally preferred for mixed media techniques.
Unlike acrylics or oils, oil pastels do not dry out because they contain non-drying oils. They remain usable for years if stored properly in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause colour fading.
